Drawings from the 1950s & 1960s

In this exhibition of drawings by Nelson Thompson the viewer gets a glimpse of the times in which they were executed. These works mostly of the 1950s and 1960s are now an important part of historical artistic legacy in NZ.

Nelson was a teacher as well as an artist forming part of remarkable company that included Colin McCahon, Louise Henderson, Ralph Hotere, Russell Clark, Robert Ellis, and Marte Szirmay.

The artistic influences of the time figure strongly in some of the drawings. Nelson spent some years in England. It was in London, at the Chelsea School of Art, that he had first hand contact with the work of Paul Nash and John Piper among others. His return to New Zealand has left us a remarkable record of transition through a lively period of artistic development.

On show at the Morgan St Gallery, 11-23 December 2008. Opening 2 - 7.30pm 11 December.
