menu 2 Thompson's art through the '70s
The Flowerhead studies continued with the watercolour medium used boldly with strong broad brush strokes. Thompson used the technique of thoroughly soaking Fabriano paper, laying it flat to work quickly and directly. He previously prepared detailed drawings and sketches. With his strong knowledge of watercolour techniques and the drying times of various pigments, he was able to create translucent effects. The veils of colour flowed across and down the paper, and seemed to expand outwards, rather than to the edge of the paper as in his earlier works.
