Thompson's art through the '60s
The '60s saw a ‘liberating’ factor with strong and vigorous works in the expressionistic style – involving less rendering of the subject matter and broad brush strokes. The ‘Flowerhead’ series and the ‘Fiordland’ series are examples of this period. In the middle to late '60s he completed some strong landscape paintings and nude drawings. For a short time he did some landscapes and pastels mainly of Great Barrier Island and Whangarei Heads.
